Bad Movie Reviews: Masters of the Universe

What makes a movie good or bad? What if you enjoyed it? Does that make it good? Welcome to our new segment, Bad Movie Reviews. In this series, we’re going to discuss films that are notoriously bad, critically, but we still get a kick out of for one reason or another. Maybe we loved it as kids, or maybe it’s so bad it’s good. In our first outing, we travel to 1987 for the live action He-Man film, Masters of the Universe!

As always, we talk news! This week, it’s mostly DC stuff with a statement from Warner Bros. about Joker, the status of Lex Luthor in Crisis on Infinite Earths, and a new backdoor pilot coming to the final season of Arrow… plus maybe a bit more.

James Gunn’s entrance to the Worlds of DC, formally the DCEU, begins with The Suicide Squad, a film that’s not quite a reboot and not quite a sequel. Our DCEU – The Batman

Our DCEU: Man of Steel

It’s time to being a brand new segment on Screen Heroes, Let’s ReWrite It. We’re going to be re-writing movies starting with the DCEU. And what better place to start than where it all began, with Superman in Man of Steel. We begin with our news segment covering things like the backlash against Star Wars actors, the massive changes coming to the leadership at DC Comics, and some speculation for Suicide Squad 2, among other things. Then we take on Man of Steel in an attempt to provide Superman a better introduction into the DCEU. We look at tone, style, characters, plot points, action sequences, and more. You don’t want to miss the kickoff of the SHCU… the Screen Heroes Cinematic Universe.

What did you think of our Man of Steel rewrite? Did we improve the film? What would you have done differently? We want to know!

SMT013: Tiny Toon Adventures and Frosted Mini-Wheats

This week, Jeremy and returning substitute co-host Erica take a look at recent Hulu addition, Steven Spielberg Presents Tiny Toon Adventures. A classic. So good.

We take a look at the first episode, where Babs and Buster create the show from scratch overnight and the Acme Acres Zone, the Tiny Toon take on The Twilight Zone.

We also discuss the complexity of Harry Potter paintings, cartoon-inspired carrot consumption, the problematic Taz Mania cartoon, false memories of the Twilight Zone and our love of classic Looney Tunes.

While we watch, we snack on Frosted Mini-Wheats and marvel at their ability to absorb all the milk in the bowl.

Are you a fan of Tiny Toon Adventures? Other Spielberg produced 90s animation? Let us know your favorite ep in the comments or on Twitter @HeroesPodcasts!

SMT07: Rugrats, Animaniacs, Peanut Butter Crunch

Danielle is back hosting this week and starts things off with a Nicktoon classic, Rugrats. We watch an episode where the sky falls and one where the babies make some TV in a cardboard box. Do Stu and Didi have a good marriage? Did Dil ruin everything? Are all the babies some sick delusion of Angelica’s? Listen to us find answers to none of these questions.

Jeremy brings another classic from the world of Stephen Spielberg’s foray into Warner Brothers animation, Animaniacs. We watch the 65th Anniversary Special and watch the Warners burn old Hollywood. Find out how Yakko, Wakko and Dot impacted world events such as World War II and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Bad audio warning: We were dealing with some leaf-blowing and mic issues early in the episode. Did the best I could to edit it all out, but this ep has some bumps, buzzing and rumbles. Sincerest apologies.

Are you a fan of Rugrats or Animaniacs? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter @SMTooncast!

Batman and Harley Quinn – Quick Movie Take

Ian and Rae of Costume Couture hit up the Fathom event for Batman and Harley Quinn, a new animated movie focusing on the Dark Knight, Harley, Nightwing, and Poison Ivy. The movie includes legendary Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy and Harley Quinn newcomer Melissa Rauch (Big Bang Theory). The story is by Bruce Timm too!

We’ve got their spoiler-free Quick Movie Take below, so check it out and then see the movie yourself on Blu-Ray August 29th.

Here’s the description from the Fathom One Night Only Event held on August 14th:

From an original story by animation icon Bruce Timm, comes an all-new DC Universe animated movie. Poison Ivy and Jason Woodrue (a.k.a. The Floronic Man) embark on an ecological quest to save the planet – and, unfortunately, eliminate most of humankind along the way. To save humanity, Batman and Nightwing are forced to enlist Harley Quinn to catch Poison Ivy, Harley’s BFF and frequent partner-in-crime. But Batman’s patience is put to the test by the unpredictable and untrustworthy Harley during the twists and turns the reluctant companions face during their bumpy road trip. The result is a thrill ride of action, adventure and comedy no Batman fan has seen before.

Batman and Harley Quinn features a stellar voice cast led by Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series) reprising his role as the Dark Knight, alongside Melissa Rauch (The Big Bang Theory) making her debut as the irrepressible Harley Quinn. Loren Lester, the voice of Robin in Batman: The Animated Series, returns as Nightwing.

Does this sound like a movie you’d enjoy? Did you see it already? Let us know your thoughts in the comments or hit us up @HeroesPodcasts on Facebook and Twitter!
