RR33: TNG Mek’ba Season 1 Best Romance

RR32: TNG Mek’ba Season 1 Best of Wes

This week we jump ahead to The Next Generation and introduce a new format we’re calling the Mek’ba! Each week, two of us will go head-to-head, making our case for why a particular episode is the best of a given topic. The third host will need to determine the winning episode. First up, we’re tackling TNG Season 1 with the next three episodes. Our maiden voyage finds us looking into the best Wesley Crusher episode of TNG Season 1. Greg has picked Episode 2 “The Naked Now” and Derreck has picked Episode 19 “Coming of Age”. Next week, we’ll rotate and it will be Jeremy and Derreck with Greg being our judge for the best Romance episode of TNG Season 1. Don’t miss it!

What do you think of our two episodes? Which one is the best Wesley Crusher episode? Do you think Wesley shines in another one from Season 1?

RR31: Khan and Miri Make Star Trek

It’s time to finish up our Star Trek: The Original Series Season 1 journey with “Miri”, “Space Seed”, and a special guest! We promise not to bonk you on the head but we will certainly talk about the significance of Khan’s first appearance in the franchise that led to The Wrath of Khan saving the franchise.

Next week we move forward in time to TNG with a brand new episode format! You don’t want to miss it.

How do you feel about “Space Seed”? Does it hold up to time? Do you think it gets a bump because of The Wrath of Khan? Is “Miri” really that bad?

RR31: Khan and Miri Make Star Trek

RR30: Charlie and the Horta

For our big episode 30 “Charlie and the Horta”, we bring on our show’s first guest (if you don’t count our convention floor interview with Doug Jones)! Hearth Barker of The Tricorder Transmissions network joins us to talk about two classic TOS episodes, “Charlie X” and “The Devil in the Dark”! Just like we’ve been doing, we tackle one low rated episode and one highly rated one. “Charlie X” is rated quite low, usually due to how is handles sexual harassment and the male ego. “The Devil in the Dark”, on the other hand, shows us the first Vulcan mind meld and a side of Spock we aren’t used to seeing.

Next week we review “Miri” and “Space Seed” (we swapped episodes, sorry about that)! Don’t miss it.

How do you feel about “The Devil in the Dark”? Does it hold up to time? Do you like the horta? Is “Charlie X” really that bad? Yes. Yes it is.

RR30: Charlie and the Horta

RR29: Mudd’s Terror

Jeremy and Derreck tackle the first appearance of Harry Mudd in “Mudd’s Women” along with Mark Leonard’s first appearance in “Balance of Terror”. While Harry Mudd is one of the more iconic recurring characters from Star Trek: The Original Series, he only appears in two live action episodes plus an episode of The Animated Series. Also, while Mark Leonard first appears as a Romulan in this Cold War era episode, he is later cast of Spock’s father. There’s a lot to unpack, so set course and engage!

Next week we review “Miri” and “Space Seed”! Don’t miss it.

How do you feel about “Balance of Terror”? Is it the best episode of Star Trek? Is “Mudd’s Women” really that bad?

SH S5E18: Best Practical Effects in Film

Visual and special effects in a movie can make or break it. A movie with solid acting that looks terrible might one day become a cult classic, but most of the time, if there’s bad special effects, people are turned off. This week, we take a look at our favorite practical effects in film. What are practical effects? These are special effects created with real, physical objects and no CGI or animation. Practical effects include puppets, robots, scale models, giant moving sets, prosthetics, and more.

What are some of your favorite practical effects? Did we miss anything you think deserved to be on our lists? We want to know!

RR27: Where Gary Mitchell Has Gone Before

Let’s be honest, a lot of podcasts have talked about Star Trek’s second pilot “Where No Man Has Gone Before”. But don’t worry! We’ve got our own fresh take on the classic Gary Mitchell episode, especially since this is Jeremy’s first viewing! We also announce our new format going forward that will make covering classic Trek a little smoother and hopefully more fun.

Join us next week for our first episode in the all new format when we review City on the Edge of Forever and The Alternative Factor!

How do you feel about “Where No Man Has Gone Before”? Do you think Gary Mitchell makes a solid antagonist?
