RR06 – Space Whales and Time Travel

It wouldn’t be Star Trek without a convoluted time travel plot, which Discovery delivers with episode 7, “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad.” This week, we are joined by cosplayer and Trek aficionado Michael Nguyen (sitting in for Derreck). We start the episode with a discussion of our favorite time travel themed episodes with a TNG classic and a couple of chroniton-packed DS9 episodes.

Then, we take our discussion to the details and plot points of “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad,” as well as some good-natured griping about the current state of pop culture criticism regarding Discovery. We discuss the music of Wyclef Jean, beer pong, and Trojan space whales. We also highlight our favorite Staments line so far, “As days go, this is a weird one.”

Join our three-man crew for a journey that will span decades, every episode, every series, every movie, and every possible timeline no matter how small.

RR02: Context is for Canon

Discovery continues with Episode 3 “Context is for Kings” and we finally get to see the USS Discovery and meet Captain Lorca! This week on Redshirts & Runabouts, we break down the episode and talk about what it did better than the prelude to the series, as well as things we might not have enjoyed.

We kick things off with our spoiler-free thoughts before breaking to dive into the details. We talk about the new characters like Captain Lorca, Cadet Tilly, and the return of Saru, the new ships, the technology, and the mission Discovery might actually be on during the series.

There’s also a tease for an upcoming Star Trek book contest! So make sure you listen!

Star Trek: Discovery First Look

It has been a long time coming, nearly a year. Last summer Star Trek: Discovery was announced. We received a title, logo, and a simple test flight video that many mistook for a final ship design. We were also given a premiere window of January 2017. Well, it’s mid-May and obviously that didn’t happen. The second premiere window of May is also being missed for a goal of Fall 2017.

This has made many fans skeptical of the show and the support CBS was or was not giving it. Well, I think many questions were answered today as CBS released official production stills and a first look trailer, in addition to adding two more episodes (15 instead of 13) to Discovery’s first season. To top that, they even announced Talking Trek, which will be a Talking Dead style talk show that also premieres this Fall.

[Best_Wordpress_Gallery id=”2″ gal_title=”Star Trek: Discovery First Look”]

Of course, many questions remain and there are some concerns from die-hard Prime timeline (pre-2009 movie) fans. For example, why do the Klingons look like that? and why do the interior ship and uniform designs look like the new movies? All good questions, especially given that CBS originally stated that Discovery would take place in the Prime timeline like all previous TV series, and not the Kelvin timeline where the three latest movies take place.

I want your thoughts! Watch the trailer below. Check out the images and then comment!

So what did you think? Are you excited for Star Trek: Discovery? Pumped? Bummed? Meh? Will you watch Talking Trek?

Let us know!

Star Trek: Discovery will premiere in the US on CBS and all remaining episodes will stream on CBS All-Access. Discovery will be available on Netflix in other territories.

Oh and live long and prosper. \\\///

SH S2E5: Star Trek Beyond & Discovery

This week we boldly go reviewing Star Trek Beyond, which opened last weekend in most of the territories it will hit. This episode is full of spoilers as we talk characters and casting, motivations, plot points, the film’s resolution, special effects, costume design, and how the movie fits in with not just the Kelvin timeline but also the Prime timeline of the Star Trek franchise in its 50th year. Then, we talk a bit about the newly named Star Trek: Discovery series coming to CBS All-Access in January 2017. We talk about the title of the series, the title logo, and the ship design along with some of our hopes or thoughts on what we’d like to see in the next Star Trek series.

Star Trek Beyond won the US domestic box office, bringing in $59.25 million beating out The Secret Life of Pets, Lights Out, and Ice Age: Collision Course. The film had a $185 million budget not counting marketing and brought in an additional $30 million internationally bringing its opening weekend total to $95.5 million.
