Light and Shadowed by General Order 7

It’s a big news week in the Trek fandom with pre-production moving along with the unnamed Picard series with news on directors, casting, and possible series titles, plus some about Discovery’s future! Then we turn our attention to the episode of the week, Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Episode 7 “Light and Shadows” which provides our first look at Spock, a new temporal anomaly, a Matrix cameo, and a ton of troll arguments about General Order 7. So strap in, put on your time seatbelt, pop your time popcorn, and let’s time warp!

We’ll be back next week to review Discovery Episode 8 “If Memory Serves”!

What do you think of the new director and casting news for the Picard show? Should the series be titled Star Trek: Destiny?

What are your thoughts on “Light and Shadows”? Do you feel that Discovery is being held to a double standard by gatekeepers? What are you feelings about General Order 7?

Short Treks – “The Escape Artist”

We enter the future year of 2019 to discuss the final Short Treks of its first season, “The Escape Artist”. Known as the Mudd episode, “The Escape Artist” features Rainn Wilson’s Harry Mudd. Wilson also directed the Short Treks episode.

Additionally, we talk about some of our hopes and concerns about Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 as we bid farewell to Rae and Zach, at least for now, as Greg is set to return next week!

We’ll be back next week with the return of Greg, plus a more detailed discussion on recent Star Trek news and the new season of Discovery!

Be sure to check out @RedshirtsPod on Twitter and follow us!

What did you think of “The Escape Artist”? Was Rainn Wilson able to hold his own? Does Short Treks have some legs? RR31: Khan and Miri Make Star Trek

It’s time to finish up our Star Trek: The Original Series Season 1 journey with “Miri”, “Space Seed”, and a special guest! We promise not to bonk you on the head but we will certainly talk about the significance of Khan’s first appearance in the franchise that led to The Wrath of Khan saving the franchise.

Next week we move forward in time to TNG with a brand new episode format! You don’t want to miss it.

How do you feel about “Space Seed”? Does it hold up to time? Do you think it gets a bump because of The Wrath of Khan? Is “Miri” really that bad?

RR31: Khan and Miri Make Star Trek

RR30: Charlie and the Horta

For our big episode 30 “Charlie and the Horta”, we bring on our show’s first guest (if you don’t count our convention floor interview with Doug Jones)! Hearth Barker of The Tricorder Transmissions network joins us to talk about two classic TOS episodes, “Charlie X” and “The Devil in the Dark”! Just like we’ve been doing, we tackle one low rated episode and one highly rated one. “Charlie X” is rated quite low, usually due to how is handles sexual harassment and the male ego. “The Devil in the Dark”, on the other hand, shows us the first Vulcan mind meld and a side of Spock we aren’t used to seeing.

Next week we review “Miri” and “Space Seed” (we swapped episodes, sorry about that)! Don’t miss it.

How do you feel about “The Devil in the Dark”? Does it hold up to time? Do you like the horta? Is “Charlie X” really that bad? Yes. Yes it is.

RR27: Where Gary Mitchell Has Gone Before

Let’s be honest, a lot of podcasts have talked about Star Trek’s second pilot “Where No Man Has Gone Before”. But don’t worry! We’ve got our own fresh take on the classic Gary Mitchell episode, especially since this is Jeremy’s first viewing! We also announce our new format going forward that will make covering classic Trek a little smoother and hopefully more fun.

Join us next week for our first episode in the all new format when we review City on the Edge of Forever and The Alternative Factor!

How do you feel about “Where No Man Has Gone Before”? Do you think Gary Mitchell makes a solid antagonist?

RR26: Captain Pike & The Cage

We kick off our TOS watch with the very first episode of Star Trek ever made, The Cage. This episode, which did not air in its full form until the 1980s, includes a different Captain, a different First Officer, a different doctor, and a fairly different tone when compared to the test of The Original Series. We are introduced to Captain Pike, played by the late Jeffrey Hunter, who leads this crew of the USS Enterprise. The Cage stands as a monument to what Gene Roddenberry initially wanted Star Trek to become and this week, we talk about it in all of its glory and failings.

If The Cage and Captain Pike are not your thing, join us next week for the second pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before!

RR24: The Undiscovered Country

While our show might be best in the original Klingon, Jeremy and I decide to take a stab at reviewing the sixth and final original series cast Star Trek film, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. The big Trek Cold War movie pits Kirk and the Enterprise against an invisible and unknown adversary right at a pivotal moment peace between the Klingon Empire and the Federation is being forged. Can the Enterprise prevail? Where is Sulu? And how much Romulan Ale is too much?

Plus, we talk about some of the Star Trek: Discovery news out of Wondercon including a special deleted scene from the season 1 finale featuring Georgiou and Section 31.

How do you feel about Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country? Where does it land in your Star Trek film ranking? Was it an appropriate send-off for the original series crew?
