GH23: Doomfist Arrives

Nintendo Pokemon Direct

(UPDATED: 1:37pm CST 2016-02-26)

In preparation for tomorrow’s 20th Anniversary of the Pokemon franchise, Nintendo presented their Pokemon Direct for the first time. This short 6 minute video provide some fantastic nostalgia with plenty of classic GameBoy graphics and 8-bit sound effects.

Pokemon Direct GameBoy Screen

Check out the various images below with some details about the Pokemon Direct event.

First, Pokemon is celebrating 20 years of game play since its original releases in Japan in 1996. Since then, the games evolved quite a bit, especially due to the technological advances with the GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advanced, and the DS line. To account for lack of compatibility of the original GameBoy games with the newer ones, Nintendo is releasing Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow in the Nintendo eShop. These games are just like the classics. Reports even say that the missingno glitch still lives.

These new digital versions of the classics will be compatible with Pokemon Bank and the Pokemon you capture can be transferred to the upcoming Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon, per Pokemon Direct.

Pokemon Direct Pokemon Bank

The previous generation of games allowed players to use seven different languages. Well, Pokemon Sun and Moon have added two more to the list, Traditional and Simplified Chinese in addition to English, Italian, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, and Korean.

Pokemon Direct Sun and Moon Languages

Per the Pokemon Direct, Pokemon Sun and Moon will be out later this year, coming Holiday 2016. We don’t have any official date, the games are already available for pre-order from Best Buy and GameStop. Amazon, for some reason, only has Pokemon Sun available. The games have a pre-order price of $39.99 and are for the Nintendo 3DS.

That’s about it for this short Pokemon Direct. The digital versions of Blue, Red, and Yellow are available tomorrow in the Nintendo eShop for $9.99 each and there are 2DS bundles out in the wild, including a special Yellow one in the UK, if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one.

Nintendo Set for Pokemon Sun and Moon

With Nintendo’s latest Direct set to come tomorrow and planned to focus completely on the ever popular Pokemon series, it looks like we’re also going to get two new games, Pokemon Sun and Moon. This comes in the wake of most people assuming Pokemon Z was on the way to round out the X & Y games and complete the trilogy. According to the wonder images provided by Nerdleaks, the trademarks were filed today but that didn’t stop the video game world from picking up the news and spreading it quickly.

Nintendo has a lot planned for the 20th anniversary of the Pokemon franchise including the TBD release of Pokemon Go, the augmented reality and geolocation game. Additionally, tons of stores are using this Saturday, February 27th as Pokemon Day with places like GameStop and Toys R Us providing special events full of sales, posters, and more goodies.

The special Nintendo Direct is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, February 26th at 9:00AM CST (10:00AM EST) with streams available through Nintendo’s website and their Twitch channel.

Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata Dies

I am going to keep this brief. Nintendo has announced that their CEO and employee since the 1980’s, Satoru Iwata has died at the age of 55. He had health issues recently but many, myself included, hoped he had recovered.

I am a Nintendo fan boy. Always have been. I love what they do and what their style stands for. Iwata saw the company through some amazingly good and bad times, everything from the GameBoy, DS, and GameCube through the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U. He also brought us the Nintendo Direct videos, which I used to write about in my old weekly column “Nintendo World”.

Whether you are a fan boy like me or not, Nintendo helped shape the video game revolution and Iwata was there. The industry will surely miss him as will the fans of Nintendo’s legendary franchises.

Rest in peace, Satoru.
