SH S2E6: SDCC 2016 Wrap-Up

Ruth ”Blindfold” Aldine: X-Men

RUTH ALDINE- WHAT MAKES BLINDFOLD UNIQUE

I Don’t know about you but as a recent Marvel enthusiast, I feel that out of all the female X-Men characters, Blindfold does NOT get the respect and credit she deserves. She’s totally overshadowed by Storm. Don’t get me wrong, I love Storm and admire her superpowers; however, Ruth Aldine (Blindfold) can roll with the best of them.

She’s a great contender when it comes to the female X-Men cast. She first appeared in Astonishing X-Men Volume 3 in 2007. She was born in North Carolina to a mother and her father who left the family soon after she was born. Ruth also has a brother, Luca, who she did not get along with. He basically hated her.

During an attempt to kill Ruth with a chainsaw, Luca ended up killing their mother while she was trying to protect Ruth, causing him to be put on Death Row and Ruth being sent to live with her aunt in Prospect Plains. Living there for 6 years was a time she really enjoyed as she was able to perfect her mutant superhero power.

Blindfold

While visiting her brother’s execution however, things took a downward spiral when her Luca Astral projected himself to steal many of Ruth’s powers, leaving her depleted of the young woman she was becoming. These early life traumas really play a big part into why Blindfold is the way she is throughout the X-Men series. Unlike the rest of the X-Men characters, Ruth Aldine was born with her superpowers. To put it simply, she was already badass from the start.

Lets take a moment to examine these mutant superpowers Blindfold has:

  • Blind-Anophthalmic
  • Psionic
  • Telapathic
  • Telekinesis
  • Clairvoyant
  • Retrocognitive
  • Precognitive

COME ON! That’s a pretty impressive list of powers here. That can’t be denied.

blindfoldAn X-Men movie about this awesome character should be made, in my opinion. Can I get an Amen in Agreement? At the very least  she should have a STRONG character feature in upcoming sequel movies. Okay, so she’s not always depicted to be the most sexy female Marvel comic character, but that should not really be a factor here. I can’t stress how much shame and embarrassment I have over the fact there is so little Blindfold mania. When I think of how she can see things without even having eyes, that’s real irony. Her precognitive powers are an excellent add to the recipe in the making of Blindfold too.

It’s seems that with all these superpower responsibility she has, Ruth Aldine seems to be a character that has a lot on her shoulders, what with trying to save the world from the bad guys after all.

I first discovered her only too recently actually. Some Marvel die hards may say I am late to the party, but I am sure glad to have been introduced to such an amazing female Marvel character . To me, she embodies a quiet courage and understated strength. Many episodes emphasize her empathy towards her peers. This quality is what stood out to me as unique. She’s a sheer fighter who has beat a lot of odds, despite her past.  She doesn’t let that hold her back from being of service to others, and we can indeed learn something from that.

Please school me with your opinions on this brilliant female X-Men character.   We at The Grid Daily would like to hear your favourite Blindfold’ moments and which of her superpowers you most admire.  We want to know that we are not alone in our Blindfold appreciation.

Planet Comicon Cosplay Gallery

(Updated: May 26th 7:40AM CST)

This year, we were lucky enough to go to Planet Comicon, Kansas City’s largest comic convention. Planet Comicon has grown considerably since it’s inception in 1999, moving from the small International Trade Center in Overland Park, KS to Bartle Hall in downtown Kansas City, KC’s premier convention center.

The convention boasted some fun new features like a free classic arcade with standup games like Ghostbusters, Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, and more! This year, Planet Comicon also brought several food trucks inside the convention hall. They even had barrel style root beer. In addition to all of that, Planet Comicon brought in tons of great guests including Neal Adams, Lou Ferrigno, Manu Bennett, Jenna Coleman, Jason Mews, George Takei, Danielle Panabaker, Hayley Atwell, Kevin Smith, and the one and only Stan Lee!

While we don’t have any official attendance numbers, many estimate well over 50,000 with Bartle Hall literally turning people away on Saturday due to reaching capacity. This was, without a doubt, the largest Planet Comicon to date. Check out our gallery below which boasts over 100 people in cosplay including characters from DC Comics, Marvels, video games, and more!

We’ve got two awesome galleries on our Facebook page with over 100 different cosplayers we saw throughout the weekend. Check them out below:

SH S1E11: ‘What If’ Iron Man Died?

In our first installment of our new “What If” Screen Heroes segment, we explore the many different stories we’d come across if Iron Man (Tony Stark) died at the end of Marvel’s Avengers. How would Avengers: Age of Ultron be affected? Would other heroes be featured more prominently with Iron Man no longer in the limelight? What about Civil War? These questions and more are answered as we pick apart the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) with this one creative change. We also go on a few tangents and rants. Always good times. Check out what we have to say and then give us your opinion in the comments below.

If you enjoyed the segment, shoot us some ‘What If’ scenarios you’d like us to tackle! Remember, we cover more than just comic book films and series. Anything featuring heroes on TV, in film, or video games is fair game.

SH S1E11: ‘What If’ Iron Man Died?

I Ship It Ep. 03 – Captain Marvel & Spider-Woman

In episode 03 of our new web series I Ship It, I stay in the Marvel Comics universe to Ship a same-sex couple. Recently, Marvel and DC Comics have become more comfortable with having same-sex couples in their canon. DC even made the Earth-2 Green Lantern gay in The New 52. So, I decided to look at two strong female superheroes in the Marvel universe who have never had a strong romance in their various incarnations, Captain Marvel and Spider-Woman. Both of these heroes have had a rough go, even being thrown to the dirt at times but never quite forgotten. Captain Marvel is even set to have her own movie in the MCU. While it’s unlikely we’ll see Spider-Woman on the big screen anytime soon, you never know, especially with the rumored now 68 characters for Infinity War.

Anyway, in Episode 01 of I Ship It, I Shipped two DC Comics characters, Batman and Zatanna. Then, in episode 02, I Shipped She-Hulk and Daredevil. Now, it’s time for Captain Marvel and Spider-Woman. Watch the video below, comment with your thoughts, and then suggest a couple for me to Ship in a later episode!

So what do you think? Would Captain Marvel and Spider-Woman make a solid couple? Do you think either one pairs better with another Marvel character? I’d love to hear your thoughts! Don’t forget to comment with some couples you’d like to see me Ship! If your suggestion gets put into an episode you’ll be in the running for a free I Ship It t-shirt!

Don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel to get an early look at I Ship It episodes as well as our Twitch broadcasts, unboxing videos, and more!

Catch you next time.

I Ship It Ep. 03 – Captain Marvel & Spider-Woman

I Ship It Ep. 02 – She-Hulk & Daredevil

Rae, co-host of our weekly podcast series Screen Heroes, continues her quest to ship fictional character couples. In Episode 02, she switches gears from the DC Universe to Marvel Comics and looks at two superheroes who were both, at times, members of the Avengers, She-Hulk and Daredevil. Daredevil has been made very popular recently with the launch of his highly successful Netflix series but She-Hulk hasn’t had the same stint on the center stage. Check out Episode 02 of I Ship It as Rae talks about why She-Hulk and Daredevil are the perfect couple while also discussing some of the other love interests both characters have had over the years both in comic books and on screen.

So what do you think? Did Rae make the case for shipping She-Hulk and Daredevil? Do you think either one is better suited for someone else? Comment below with your thoughts and don’t forget to send us couples you’d like to see Rae ship for a chance to win some goodies like t-shirts and 3D printed stuff!

Stay tuned for next week’s episode of I Ship It. Rae will be shipping two more Marvel characters, Ms. Marvel and Spider-Woman. Don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel so you get a first peek at our latest videos.

Preview: “I Ship It” Web Series Debut

Here at The Grid Daily, we are always trying to come up with new ways to express our fandom. That’s why, beginning Tuesday, February 9th, we’ll be debuting our new web series I Ship It hosted by me (Rae of the Super Sirens)!

What’s the new series about? Every week, I’ll match-up two fictional characters whom I believe would just make the best couple ever. I’ll also take suggestions from viewers!

Now, these fictional characters can really be anyone from comic books, movies, TV, novels, etc. In Season 1, I’ll be focusing on comic book characters, primarily superheroes. So expect to see me Ship people from DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and more.

Why is the series called I Ship It? The term to “Ship” two people has been around for a little while and is basically short for “relationship”. Urban dictionary defines “shipping” as:

A term used to describe fan fictions that take previously created characters and put them as a pair. It usually refers to romantic relationships, but it can refer platonic ones as well. (Just think of “shipping” as short for “relationSHIP”.)

So, while Superman and Wonder Woman have been together at times in comic books, I’ll focus on some pairings that might not have been as obvious or provided enough development. I’ll also provide some pairings that you may have never considered.

I Ship It Logo

I Ship It is going to be a weekly web series via The Grid Daily’s YouTube channel. New episodes will go out on Tuesdays with the first one being February 9th. Be sure to head over to our YouTube page and subscribe to you’ll be the first to know when new episodes premiere.  Haven’t subscribed yet? You can do so here.

Our YouTube page includes lots of other great videos like unboxings of subscription boxes like the Funko Marvel Collector Corps and Smuggler’s Bounty, as well as our Twitch video game broadcasts.

I Ship Batman and Zatanna

That’s it for now. Please join me on Tuesday for our first episode where I match up Batman and Zatanna from DC Comics. And don’t forget to comment with suggestions of couples you’d like to see Shipped!
