SMT013: Tiny Toon Adventures and Frosted Mini-Wheats

This week, Jeremy and returning substitute co-host Erica take a look at recent Hulu addition, Steven Spielberg Presents Tiny Toon Adventures. A classic. So good.

We take a look at the first episode, where Babs and Buster create the show from scratch overnight and the Acme Acres Zone, the Tiny Toon take on The Twilight Zone.

We also discuss the complexity of Harry Potter paintings, cartoon-inspired carrot consumption, the problematic Taz Mania cartoon, false memories of the Twilight Zone and our love of classic Looney Tunes.

While we watch, we snack on Frosted Mini-Wheats and marvel at their ability to absorb all the milk in the bowl.

Are you a fan of Tiny Toon Adventures? Other Spielberg produced 90s animation? Let us know your favorite ep in the comments or on Twitter @HeroesPodcasts!

SH S2E22: Fantastic Beasts Review

It’s time to return to the Harry Potter Universe with the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which just landed in U.S. theaters last weekend. The new film that takes place in the 1920s was penned by J.K. Rowling herself and stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, and Colin Farrell.

With the movie new to theaters, we must warn you, there are spoilers in our review as we discuss characters, main plot points, expectations, and hopes for future films in the Fantastic Beasts series. Current plans are to include five distinct Fantastic Beasts films but we don’t expect them all to focus on Newt Scamander and his new friends.

We also talk a little bit about our First Annual Screen Heroes Awards scheduled for Tuesday, December 6th at 8PM CST live on Twitch!

Don’t forget that we have re-branded! The Grid Daily is now the Heroes Podcast Network and we have new homes across the Interwebs. So check out the updated links below and make sure you follow our brand new Twitch Channel at twitch.tv\heroespodcasts.

SH S2E22: Fantastic Beasts Review

So Many Theme Parks!

Last week, Universal Studios announced its new deal with Nintendo to bring new theme parks to life dedicated to Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, and the rest of our favorite characters!  While Universal has created haunted houses based on franchises like Silent Hill and Resident Evil, the world of video games has been largely untapped by way of theme parks as of now.  There have been no official reports of exactly what the park could feature but fans have already begun to speculate actual Mario Kart Go Carts and something dedicated to Splatoon.

Universal Studios Theme Parks Nintendo Logo

This deal is also very unique because Universal plans to build a Nintendo theme park at each of their four locations (Orlando, Hollywood, Singapore, Japan) as well as break ground on a fifth location in Beijing.  This is, of course, a massive undertaking considering Orlando’s Harry Potter’s Wizarding World still remains the only Harry Potter theme park Universal has planned.  The park plans to open in 2021.  I better start planning my vacation now.

Walt Disney World Theme Parks Star Wars Logo

Universal’s largest rival, Disney, has also made enormous theme park plans for some of its newly acquired franchises.  Earlier this year, Disney announced the intention of building a theme park set in the Star Wars universe, in addition to the themed rides already found in Disney World.  Disney chief Bob Iger has reported the intention of the theme park being based on the new films made under the Disney name, including Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens  and Star WarsRogue One.  Since then, the presence of Star Wars has increased tremendously at all of the company’s global locations.

Which of these theme parks are you most looking forward to? Comment below!

Back to Hogwarts

Harry Potter was a phenomenon the world had never seen before and may not see again.  Seven books and eight movies were responsible for breaking records, spawning a massive following, theme parks, food, and countless merchandising opportunities that my wallet has fallen victim to multiple times.  Its effect on the world has been no less than (pardon the pun) magical.

Which is why it comes as no surprise that in the next few years we’ll be seeing two more incarnations in the Harry Potter universe.  The first to be announced (all the way back in 2013) is an adaptation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the first of a new trilogy.  The book was published in 2001 under J. K. Rowling’s pseudonym Newt Scamander and has achieved great success being a companion to the Harry Potter series, along with Quidditch Throughout the Ages. It’s written as a textbook of Harry’s from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (that’s right; going back to the beginning) based on the study of magizoology, or magical creatures.

The first film is set to be released November 18, 2016 with Rowling debuting as the head screenwriter and David Yates (director of the Harry Potter films from 2006-2011) rumored to direct.  It has been reported that the film will take place in 1920’s New York and will focus on Newt Scamander, making the film an indirect prequel to the Harry Potter series. Oscar winning actor Eddie Redmayne is cast as the lead with Katherine Waterston placed as Tina.  Actors Ezra Miller, Josh Gad, and Michael Cera are currently in talks for various roles.  The second and third films are tentatively scheduled for November 2018 and November 2020, respectively.

Along with a brand new trilogy, we’ll also be seeing Harry Potter on the stage. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was recently announced to debut summer 2016 at London’s Palace Theater. While no synopsis has been provided, it has been confirmed that the story will be focused around Harry himself and fall somewhere in the timeline we already know. Rowling herself has even said the play will be considered ‘canon.’ The play is written by Jack Thorne and directed by John Tiffany. Music will be done by artist Imogen Heap.

Both of these projects seem to have exciting potential! We’ll be bringing you updates as they flood in! Until then, are you excited for more Harry Potter? Let us know in the comments below.
