This week is a little different than previous episodes. Once a month, we’re doing prime time cartoons instead of our usual Saturday Morning or after school fare. Jeremy starts things off with late night [Adult Swim] classic, The Brak Show Starring Brak and Danielle goes with WB gem, The Oblongs.

We also start things off with a discussion of the cartoon career of Mark Hamill, including a very meta Justice League short that was released recently. We also go into a Nicktoon creator getting fired for sexual harassment. Very adult stuff.

The cereal this week, to go with the theme of being very adult, is a limited apple cinnamon flavor of Special K. This was Jeremy’s pick even though, as he learned doing the research, is a cereal targeted at weight-conscious women.

SMT03: Hey Arnold, 2 Stupid Dogs, Cocoa Pebbles

Another Saturday morning is here, so come down in your PJs, grab a bowl of Cocoa Pebbles and watch a couple old school toons with Jeremy and Danielle. On this week’s show, we give a quick rundown of some of our favorite series so listeners can get a sense of what we’re into in a broad sense. We’ve re-written those lists about 30 times since recording, the ones we listed were off the dome, but it’s an accurate cross section of what we’re into toon-wise. Danielle kicks off this week with is S1, Ep19 of Nicktoon classic Hey Arnold titled “Magic Show” where Arnold puts on an embarrassing magic show that leaves Helga questioning her role in the universe and things keep getting dark when Arnold prepares to die in “Twenty Four Hours to Live.”

Jeremy keeps the toon train rolling with a little known fave, 2 Stupid Dogs S1, Ep13 “Love Doctors” where the dogs help Kenny find love, “Voodoo Goat” where Secret Squirrel takes on a goaty foe, and finally “Cat!” where Little Dog struggles with his greatest fear.

We venture past the haunted land of monster cereals this week with a trip to Bedrock for a couple of delicious bowls of Cocoa Pebbles.

SMT02: Beetlejuice, Home Movies, Boo-berry

Saturday Morning Tooncast is back for an extra spooky Halloween-themed episode 2! Early in the podcast to rely on contrived themes? Maybe. But we did it anyway. For you. On this week’s show, we will be discussing some hot toon news including a new Hey Arnold movie. Jeremy’s toon pick is S1, Ep11 of Beetlejuice “Prince of the Neitherworld” where BJ trades Lydia for a job as Neitherworld Court Jester and Danielle counters with a Halloween episode of Home Movies, S3, Ep13 “Coffins and Cradles” where Brandon’s step mother interrupts costume party plans to have Brandon’s half-brother.

We continue our look at Halloween monster cereals with Boo-berry and introduce our rating system. We’re not just discussing cereal anymore, we’re rating them! One to ten spoons. How many will it get? You’ll have to listen to find out!

Costume Couture: DC Superhero Girls

Many superhero and villain costumes come off as being a little too adult for kids. You’ve got the classic Powergirl boob window and Starfire showing off a lot of skin. Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn aren’t exactly the most child friendly characters out there either. So, DC Entertainment had their work cut out for them when they decided to bring an animated series to young girls, DC Superhero Girls. The show start in 2015 as a webseries with one straight to DVD movie. DC Superhero Girls includes class good guys like Wonder Woman and Batgirl, plus some villain and anti-hero types like Harley and Ivy.

This week, we talk about their costumes and styles, looking and how DC Superheroe Girls was able to bring these characters to young girls without totally losing who they are while keeping them appropriate.

DCC Wrap-Up and Cosplay Gallery

DCC, Denver Comic Con, is one of the bigger comic convention in the United States, hosting well over 100,000 people in 2016’s convention. Celebrity guests in 2017 included Weird Al Yankovic, Catherine Tate, Clare Kramer, some of the Stranger Things kids, and the entire voice cast of the animated Justice League TV show, among others. Of course, DCC included an array of comic book creators, authors, and animators, making the convention a pop culture scene for just about anyone. While we had a small presence at DCC, we were able to get a couple people on the ground. Check out our small cosplay gallery below and then a first-person account of DCC 2017.

My experience at DCC was for the most part an enjoyable one. It is a huge con and it’s a lot to take in so be prepared. The convention center itself was huge and had a lot of room for all kinds of artists, booths, cosplayers, vendors, and more. They used every inch of that space for what that could so I was impressed. They had some great media guests who I got to meet and get pictures/autographs with. These are guests I haven’t seen at our local con so seeing them was a real treat. But the con wasn’t without its issues. Mainly how they handled the prop policy concerning fake guns (announcing that no kind of gun or anything resembling a gun would be allowed in an hour before the con doors opened on Saturday….even though I still saw some), enforcing bag checks, line control, and costume checks. A serious lack in each department for those if you ask me. Also lacking was the organization skills for huge group photos. You were kind of herded on a stage, was told where to stand and then wasn’t being told you were being photographed until you heard someone say “and now do another pose” Like wait what now? I didn’t know we were starting. If DCC fixes what they did wrong this year then I would highly consider coming back, its a semi close con with lots to do and see. Out of 10 stars, I would give it for sure a 7.5 out of 10.

Did you attend DCC 2017? What did you think of the convention? What were you most excited to see? What annoyed you the most? Comment below!
