Preview: “I Ship It” Web Series Debut

Here at The Grid Daily, we are always trying to come up with new ways to express our fandom. That’s why, beginning Tuesday, February 9th, we’ll be debuting our new web series I Ship It hosted by me (Rae of the Super Sirens)!

What’s the new series about? Every week, I’ll match-up two fictional characters whom I believe would just make the best couple ever. I’ll also take suggestions from viewers!

Now, these fictional characters can really be anyone from comic books, movies, TV, novels, etc. In Season 1, I’ll be focusing on comic book characters, primarily superheroes. So expect to see me Ship people from DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and more.

Why is the series called I Ship It? The term to “Ship” two people has been around for a little while and is basically short for “relationship”. Urban dictionary defines “shipping” as:

A term used to describe fan fictions that take previously created characters and put them as a pair. It usually refers to romantic relationships, but it can refer platonic ones as well. (Just think of “shipping” as short for “relationSHIP”.)

So, while Superman and Wonder Woman have been together at times in comic books, I’ll focus on some pairings that might not have been as obvious or provided enough development. I’ll also provide some pairings that you may have never considered.

Smuggler’s Bounty Box #2 Unboxing

We continue our unboxing of the Funko\Star Wars themed subscription box, Smuggler’s Bounty. This month is the second month for the service and features the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Resistance box. Last month brought us the First Order box. Check out our video here.

There was a lot of speculation about what POP Vinyl might be inside and whether or not it was a flocked one. Be sure to check out our unboxing video below to find out what we got plus all of the other great goodies.

What comes in these boxes? For those who don’t know, the official Funko services are completely exclusive items. Everything in the box is only available in the box. Items include pins and patches, t-shirts, POP Vinyls, mugs, variant comic books, and other fun collectibles. While some of the items might look familiar (see Captain Phasma’s POP from last month), they are different than what is available at retailers. For example, the standard Captain Phasma is grey\silver but the exclusive Smuggler’s Bounty version is shiny chrome.

Suicide Squad Trailer Review

The second trailer for the highly anticipated DC/Warner Brothers movie titled Suicide Squad dropped recently and has the internet all in a buzz. From what this trailer has shown us, this movie looks to not only be very faithful with how the Suicide Squad comic and characters are now in the New 52 universe, but to also have a good amount of humor and some very intense action scenes along with a lot of the squad’s characters’ origins being told throughout. This trailer utilizes Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” throughout with quick cuts of action, characters interacting with one another, humor, and with Harley Quinn having the last line in the trailer which is, “We’re bad guys, it’s what we do.” as she smashes a window that she passes to take a purse she wanted. This trailer gave us a even closer look to some of the fan favorite characters like Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, Enchantress and of course The Joker. What was nice about this trailer is that we still don’t know 100% what the story for this movie even is.

We know that Amanda Waller assembles the team to stop a powerful force from rising up and taking over the world. This makes me believe, along with a lot of people on the internet that it will be the Suicide Squad vs. The Enchantress and her demon minions. That alone should make a very cool and fun story to watch, but add in The Joker and who knows where this movie will lead. DC was taking a gamble with this movie and how the tone of it is but I can see it paying off big time. This movie will not only introduce us to a new portrayal of The Joker, (which we haven’t seen on screen since The Dark Knight) but a lot of characters’ first time in a DC movie all together, which is most, if not all the squad members. If this movie does well, then we can for sure see a second one in the mix or even solo outings for certain characters. This trailer for sure pumped me up for this movie; the first teaser shown at SDCC last year got me curious, but this got me full blown interested to see how DC will pull off bringing the infamous Suicide Squad to the big screen this year. Be sure to check out the posters and trailer down below and let us know what you think about the Suicide Squad movie. Will it meet your expectations?

Bad Robot Surprises with 10 Cloverfield Lane

While the world was focused on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, J.J. Abrams, Bad Robot, and Paramount were planning something. The surprise came mainly to those who saw 13 Hours opening weekend because they were treated with a trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, a horror\suspense film starring John Goodman that, according to Abrams himself, is a “blood sequel” to the 2008 film Cloverfield. The new movie, while not a direct sequel, may be connected and exist in the same universe as the original or it might simply be similar in tone and style, which is were the “blood sequel” comes into play. The IMDB page is light, showing no images or even a movie poster for 10 Cloverfield Lane, which is surprising since the film is slated for a March 11th release, meaning less than two months away. Additionally, the film’s cast is currently only three people, John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (The Thing  (2011), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), and John Gallagher Jr. (Jonah Hex). 10 Cloverfield Lane is directed by Dan Trachtenberg, marking his feature film directorial debut.

We’ve got the trailer below and as you can see for yourself, much is left to explain and understand about this quickly upcoming horror film but IMDB takes a stab at it with their synopsis:

Waking up from a car accident, a young woman finds herself in the basement of a man who says he’s saved her life from a chemical attack that has left the outside uninhabitable.

Sounds mysterious to be sure.

Check out the trailer below!

Alright, what did you think? Are you excited for 10 Cloverfield Lane? Do you think it’ll connect to Cloverfield in a big way? Comment below with your thoughts!

Oh and “I Think We’re Alone Now” is just a fantastic, creepy song to put in that trailer. I think it sold it for me.

Star Trek Beyond: Trailer Reaction

The new Star Trek Beyond trailer dropped earlier this week, with rumors of it showing before the much anticipated upcoming Star Wars film. The first thing I noticed was how crude the first scene was with Kirk and Scotty. It looked so mashed together. They pasted scenes from the film together to sell the Beastie Boys song, “Sabotage”. Recycling from the first film’s music. This isn’t unusual for a teaser though. Neither is a simplified representation.

Typically trailers try to put all films into cookie cutter genres; action, romance, comedy, etc. So don’t get your feathers all ruffled just yet if this one comes across as an action adventure romp. Hollywood is expertly adept at twisting and turning films to fit their cookie cutter image of what they think will get the most butts in seats in July. They rushed this one out to hit with Star Wars. I know first impressions aren’t that good but teaser trailers usually suck, instead lest take a closer look at some of the more interesting details.

If you haven’t seen the first Star Trek Beyond trailer yet, check it out below before continuing.

Enterprise Destruction

You clearly see the port-side nacelle separate and the neck linking the primary and secondary hull take heavy damage. There are also hints of the saucer separating and the crew using escape pods. This wouldn’t be the first time the Big E was taken out in a film (see Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek: Generations ) and even more times on the television show; this is a popular way to ramp up the drama and excitement if it’s done right. Ultimately the ship is a part of the family and when it dies you can feel its loss. Hopefully, the ship isn’t sacrificed on the altar of action and adventure. Maybe they’ll try to evoke the sadness of the Search for Spock. One thing to note is that the Enterprise was attacked by a swarm, kamikaze style. Star Trek usually doesn’t touch on either of these often. The only exception being Voyager’s episode, “Swarm”.

Star Trek Beyond: Nacelle Damage

New Aliens

There looks to be at least two new aliens introduced in Star Trek Beyond; one enemy, one friendly. The hostile one (Idris Elba) looks to be a mixture of perhaps Jem’hadar and Reman, and probably with the same disposition to match. The other is a more friendly, black and white toned alien with a wielding a staff, presumably played by Sofia Boutella. What these two characters represent in the story is unknown but it may be related to the two different types of locals in the film cities and wilderness

Star Trek Beyond: Idris Elba Alien
New Uniforms

The obvious one would be the previously leaked Guardians of the Galaxy style worn by Kirk. Though unoriginal, it looks good. Maybe Paramount is hoping to cash in on the casual fun of Guardians of The Galaxy. But more the subtle change would be the regular duty uniforms seen on the ship and on the surface of the planet(s). It looks like a high mandarin collar has been added with some slight shoulder pads. And it looks like the fine texture that gave the uniforms a jersey, modern sports look has been dropped. With the high collar, plain texture, and shoulder pads it shares many similarities with the TNG uniforms. We don’t get many clear shots of the new regular duty uniform so it’s hard to say if it’s an improvement. Usually, high collars and shoulder pads add a certain professionalism to the look, a seriousness. Maybe hinting at the true tone of the film. I guess we’ll find out in July if they actually pull it off.

Star Trek Beyond Plot Speculation

Creeping on forum boards, hoping to get glimpse of movies before they release really isn’t my thing. It’s just that I prefer something more tangible than rumors. From what I’ve seen, the ship takes heavy damage and the crew has used escape pods. But I wonder if this happens at the start of the film instead of at the climax at the end as it looks like they continue on the planet surface for a bit. The film may have a survivalist aspect with the ship being lost and the crew captured as POWs with Kirk saying “we have no ship, no crew” supporting this. A sort of Great Escape style story of the crew fighting to survive and get the upper hand of their captors. Perhaps Starfleet has gotten too ambitious pressing Beyond civilized space and found that “this is where the Frontier pushes back.” I love that line, I just hope it’s better than Voyager’s “Back to Basics” episode if this is the case. Either way this is just idle speculation.

Conclusion

The newer Star Trek films have been hit and miss with Trekkies and critics alike. After the less than perfect Into Darkness iteration they’ll need Star Trek Beyond to do much better, well at least if they want to keep making movies. Add to that a strong desire for the studio to get that huge Avengers and Guardians kind of revenue, you have some potential for Star Trek Beyond to be a hit. Consider also that they’re already taking steps to make another film after this and it makes me wonder if it will be a semi-cliffhanger like the end of Star Trek III. But when it comes to trailers, I’m too jaded and I try to stick to the look and feel of it, ignoring the studio’s attempt to cookie-cutter categorization. It looks like they may be setting audiences up for an emotional loss and comeback story. Are they bold enough to end it like Empire Strikes Back? All in all, just try to remember teaser trailers are rushed and try to fit cookie cutter ideas of genres. Let’s be a little patient shall we. Isn’t Star Trek about optimism. Keep your chin up Trekkies!

MCU Phase 2 – Unboxing

This week, Marvel Studios’ released their MCU Phase 2 Collector’s Edition box set.  If you remember back a few years, Phase 1 was released in the metal briefcase with the glowing Tesseract inside, most popular from Avengers. This time, we get the Orb from Guardians of the Galaxy, complete with glowing purple Power Stone, plus a ton of extra content featuring goodies from all the Phase 2 MCU films. That means bonus swag from: Iron Man 3, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Ant-Man. The MCU Phase 2 box is filled with so much more than the Phase 1, it gets me even more excited for what Marvel continues to bring to the table. Some of the stuff even alludes to what’s to come in the first Phase 3 movie on Marvel’s docket: Captain America: Civil War.   Will Phase 3 be the Infinity Gauntlet?!?! (Hint: IT BETTER BE).

Join me while I break down the entire set including the box art and every little piece of fun content inside the mysterious envelope!

On March 12th, 2015 Ghostbusters: The Board Game was successfully funded on Kickstarter. This Cryptozoic Entertainment campaign was designed to bring us a miniatures based Ghostbusters game featuring all of our favorite Ghostbusters, ghosts, ghouls, and other creatures. As the Cryptozoic team crushed their goals, new stretch perks were added, each one bringing in more miniatures or bigger ones until we got our 100mm size “Impossible Mode” Stay Puft. I was lucky enough to be part of the campaign, contributing at their Mass Hysteria level. Now that my Ghostbusters: The Board Game Deluxe Edition has arrived, join me in my unboxing which showcases all that this version of the game has to offer including a look at some of the miniatures involved, especially the big bad ones, like our marshmallow friend.

Smuggler’s Bounty is finally here! From the company that brought us the Marvel Collector Corps subscription box, Funko now enters the Star Wars universe with their Smuggler’s Bounty box. So, I sat down to unbox our first Smuggler’s Bounty box to see what was inside! Take a look at the video below and then let us know in the comments if this is a subscription box you’ll be signing up for.
