Costume Couture: LGBT+ & Cosplay at Planet Comicon

Costume Couture’s first episode of 2018 is a big one, with a live audience! Rae and Ian return with their LGBT+ & Cosplay panel, this time at Planet Comicon with three special guests, Ana Chronistic Cosplay, Luna Flare, and Regina La-Rae Cosplay. Rae moderates and helps talk through the panelists’ histories of LGBT+, coming out to friends and family, difficulties they’ve run into, and how they express themselves through cosplay and drag.

Costume Couture: Joker Spotlight

What’s a Harley without her Joker? As chosen by you, The Joker was our next character to receive a spotlight. Donning the purple and green since the 1940’s, we chart his evolution from the joke of the Batman rogues to the king psychopath he is today.  We run through our favorite comic book looks and which films we preferred him in. And just like last time, we talk about some of our favorite cosplayers like Harley’s Joker and Vendaros.

Costume Couture: Do You Even Gijinka?

Of all the trends in cosplay, gijinkas are probably one of our favorites.  A gijinka, if you aren’t sure, is a human version of a non human character. Cosplayers get to bring out the largest amount of creativity when designing these costumes. There is literally no right or wrong way to do it. This episode, Ian and Rae throw gijinka suggestions at each other and ask them to cosplay it in 5 minutes or less. That’s right; it’s our first game show. Do you have any gijinkas in your wardrobe? What would you be interested in cosplaying? Check it out our video below and see if our hosts were up to the challenge.

Costume Couture: Cosplay and LGBT+

Ian and Rae present the first live episode of Costume Couture from Kansas City Comic Con.  With us was Lili Jonae and Luna Flare of Kansas City cosplay notoriety. Cosplay has the funny habit of seeping into our every day lives and becoming a part of our identity. Often it can cross the streams and bring out a comforting chance to express ourselves. We talk about how being members of the LGBT community and the cosplay community intertwine with each and how when you’re so passionate about something, it connects to everything.

Costume Couture: Tips and Tricks 1 – Cosplay and Conventions

Cosplaying isn’t for the faint of heart. Cosplaying at conventions is especially tough. You have so much to worry about. What am I gonna bring? What gets left behind? What if my costume breaks? What if my makeup smudges?

Never fear; Rae and Ian are back for the first in a long line of Tips and Tricks segment, this one focusing on how to navigate conventions while in cosplay. This episode covers everything from proper hygiene to etiquette. Never attend a convention unprepared again.  And this isn’t just for beginners. There are helpful tidbits in here for even the most seasoned convention goers.

Be sure to comment some helpful tips that get through a convention. We’d love to hear from you.

Costume Couture: Harley Quinn Spotlight

Harley Quinn has quickly become one of the most recognizable and iconic DC Comics characters even though she’s only been around since 1992. As a character who debuted in Batman: The Animated Series, she’s had to overcome her non-comic book origin but has done so with flying colors… at least, black, red, and white.

This week, we discuss many of her different looks over the years from her original debut, her Margot Robbie Suicide Squad version, Injustice video games, and more. Then we talk about some of our favorite Harley Quinn cosplayers like Jessica Nigri, Triple Diamond Entertainment, Thousand Faces Cosplay, just to name a few.

Costume Couture: DC Superhero Girls

Many superhero and villain costumes come off as being a little too adult for kids. You’ve got the classic Powergirl boob window and Starfire showing off a lot of skin. Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn aren’t exactly the most child friendly characters out there either. So, DC Entertainment had their work cut out for them when they decided to bring an animated series to young girls, DC Superhero Girls. The show start in 2015 as a webseries with one straight to DVD movie. DC Superhero Girls includes class good guys like Wonder Woman and Batgirl, plus some villain and anti-hero types like Harley and Ivy.

This week, we talk about their costumes and styles, looking and how DC Superheroe Girls was able to bring these characters to young girls without totally losing who they are while keeping them appropriate.

Costume Couture: Overwatch Summer Games

Overwatch has taken the gaming world by storm over the last 18 months or so since its premiere at BlizzCon. Since then, the lively, colorful characters have received tons of various skins ranging from color variations to full on character changes. Many of those skins came in the form of holiday themed events, like the Summer Games which just ended yesterday.

This week, we talk about our favorite Overwatch character costumes and a couple of our favorite cosplayers who bring them to life.

Costume Couture: Injustice 2

The battle for DC continues in a new video game, Injustice 2 and we’re here to talk about the incredibly cool and sometimes totally lame costumes. Injustice is an alternate DC universe where Superman is the bad guy, just about anyone can get superpowers, and everyone wears armor. Sometimes that creates a very cool new look but other times, we just don’t understand why they bothered.
